E-commerce development: opportunities, motivations, and challenges

(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam's e-commerce is experiencing robust growth, exceeding 25%, with a market value surpassing 25 billion USD. Every day, Vietnamese consumers spend nearly 32 million USD across five major e-commerce platforms: Shopee, Lazada, Tiki, Sendo, and Tiktok Shop. The expansion of these platforms is opening up global opportunities for Vietnamese products, creating both motivations and challenges.

By the end of 2023, e-commerce contributed roughly 15-17% of Vietnam's digital economy. Vietnam has more than 14 million stores and 9,000 markets, and the e-commerce trend is accelerating, particularly post-COVID-19. Transitioning wholesale and retail activities to e-commerce platforms has become a significant trend.

Tran Tuan Anh, CEO of Shopee Vietnam, says the company has helped thousands of businesses join e-commerce platforms, leading to a sharp increase in revenue compared to traditional business models. Currently, Shopee is helping businesses access more markets through training programs, new approaches like livestream sales, and providing tools to enhance their e-commerce operations, said Tuan Anh.

Tuan Anh told VOV: "We have been working with a large number of businesses, particularly focused on small and medium-sized enterprises, to help them access e-commerce. We have implemented support policies to help them access e-commerce more easily and provide them with skills and tools to operate effectively."

While Vietnamese e-commerce is rapidly expanding, it also faces several challenges, such as the digital divide, a shortage of skilled human resources, and competition from foreign companies. Cross-border e-commerce, product quality, and consumer protection are additional concerns.

Economist Vo Tri Thanh says domestic enterprises must enhance their competitiveness and strengthen their business links. E-commerce businesses should view international competition as an opportunity to collaborate with foreign companies in bringing Vietnamese goods to foreign markets. Mr. Thanh highlights three crucial points for Vietnamese goods: "It’s important to improve business scale and quality, align with current consumer trends such as sustainability and safety, and be able to tell compelling stories that showcase Vietnamese culture, traditions, and values."

Recently, Vietnamese digital technology companies have developed e-commerce platforms that connect with major global platforms like Amazon, Alibaba, and Timo. This integration allows products listed on Vietnam's e-commerce platforms to appear on the world's largest platforms, directly connecting buyers with sellers and manufacturers.
