Mekong Delta attracts Japanese investment

(VOVWORLD) - The Mekong Delta and Japan have a huge potential for cooperation, but Japanese investment in the region ranks 4th after the Republic of Korea, Taiwan (China), and Singapore. The Mekong Delta has a young, dynamic, well-trained workforce and a good business environment, but it needs more cooperation in agriculture, processing, manufacturing, tourism, and services.

The Mekong Delta is Vietnam’s agricultural hub. It leads in agricultural and fishery exports such as rice and seafood. Kawaue Junichi, Consul-General of Japan in Ho Chi Minh City, said Japanese businesses can invest in industrial-agricultural models adaptable to climate change. Japan and the Mekong Delta have cooperated in supplying high-quality agricultural products to Japan and other countries, as well as finance, credit, healthcare, education, and vocational training in medicine, IT, architecture, and construction.

Vo Thanh Thong, Chairman of the Can Tho municipal People’s Committee, said Can Tho has attracted high-tech projects which are environment-friendly and in line with its restructuring orientations. “The city authorities call on Japanese businesses to study the market and invest in agriculture, high-tech, manufacturing, and processing. Cooperation in education, healthcare, and cultural exchange will also help strengthen the Vietnam-Japan friendship.”

The Mekong Delta has attracted 170 FDI projects from Japan, totaling 2.2 billion USD and accounting for 10.5% of the region’s total FDI. The inauguration of the Vietnam-Japan Friendship Industrial Park in Can Tho city and the first direct flight between Tokyo and Can Tho have opened new cooperation opportunities.
