(VOVworld)-Science and technology are the key to agricultural restructuring in tandem with building new-style rural areas, said experts and managers at a recent conference in Hanoi hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Conference delegates stressed that science and technology are crucial for restructuring agriculture towards increasing added value and ensuring sustainable development in line with developing new-style rural areas. Scentific and technological application helps the agricultural sector respond better to climate change and improve its global competitiveness.

“Agricultural restructuring and sustainable agriculural development require adapation to climate change, ensuring adequate water resources and measures to mitigate the aftereffects of natural disasters. We should carefully analyze all these factors”, said Former Minister of Water Resources Vu Trong Hong.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong said that science and technology have played an important role in the impressive progress of Vietnam’s agricultural sector over the past 30 years. From being a country that suffered chronic food shortages, Vietnam has become a leading rice exporter and boasted more than 10 agricultural products with an export value surpassing 10 billion USD each. Mr. Cuong stressed the need to mobilize full domestic resources and take advantage of international suppport to speed up sciencetific and technological development.  

 “Science and technology are the only solutions to transforming agriculture from an individual farm -based model to mass commodity production. Our ministry will initiate a mechanism to encourage scientific advances”, Minister Cuong added.
