Provincial Anti-Corruption Steering Committees needed to better fight corruption

(VOVWORLD) - One of the major issues being discussed at the on-going Party Central Committee plenum in Hanoi is the project to establish a Provincial Steering Committee for Anti-Corruption and Negativity. The public says this is an important follow-up to the Central Steering Committee for Anti-Corruption, which has been operating effectively for years. The establishment of a Provincial Steering Committee is seen as a way to build consensus in the fight against corruption.

Corruption is a risk the Communist Party of Vietnam pointed out nearly 30 years ago that can affect the cause of national construction, defense, and development. The risk of corruption and negativity will continue if drastic measures are not taken to combat it.

Consensus at all levels

The Central Steering Committee for Anti-Corruption, headed by General Secretary of the Party Central Committee Nguyen Phu Trong, has been visibly efficient in combatting corruption.

An increasing number of cases of corruption and economic violations have been detected and handled. The Party Central Committee, the Politburo, the Secretariat, and the Central Commission for Inspection have disciplined a number of Party organizations and officials at the central level. The results have strengthened people’s trust in the Party and State. A Provincial Steering Committee for Anti-Corruption is needed to coordinate with the central level Committee in a spirit of consensus and transparency.

So far Hanoi, and Thai Binh, Soc Trang, An Giang, and Khanh Hoa provinces have established Anti-Corruption Steering Committees. Party Committees of all provinces and cities have agreed to establish Anti-Corruption Steering Committees.

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong told the ongoing Party Central Committee session: “I propose that the Central Committee study and give an opinion on establishing provincial Steering Committees for Anti-Corruption to strengthen leadership, direction, and implementation from the central to the local level in a spirit of consensus and transparency at all levels. The provincial level has its duty. I believe the whole system can do better.”

Correct, necessary policy

The public agrees that the Provincial Steering Committees for Anti-Corruption will be an extended arm of the Central Committee. If they are well organized, the provincial Committees will make anti-corruption efforts more effective and unified from the central to the local level.

Major General Nguyen Mai Bo, former Member of the National Assembly's National Defense and Security Committee, said: “An Anti-Corruption Steering Committee at the provincial level will handle cadres at the provincial and district manager level, making the fight against corruption and negativity more comprehensive. This policy is absolutely correct and necessary.”

Nguyen Viet Chuc, member of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front said the provincial Steering Committees will promptly resolve pending issues in localities. The policy has the public’s support.

If the project to establish provincial Steering Committees for Anti-Corruption is adopted at ongoing Party Central Committee session, anti-corruption work will improve to meet the people’s aspiration.
