The UN General Assembly’s High-level Week, from September 18-26, takes place amid geopolitical tensions, an unstable world economy, and climate changes affecting the lives and livelihoods of people on every continent. These issues are challenging the world’s peace, security, and development, and clearly no single country can solve them on its own.

With the theme “Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all,”  the UNGA High-level Week is an opportunity for countries to reaffirm international solidarity and commitment to multilateralism in which the United Nations plays a central role. It’s also an opportunity for countries to share ideas and experiences, shape long-term visions and strategies, and find cooperative solutions to respond to shared challenges.

Vietnam continues to contribute to the UN

Last year Vietnam contributed significantly to the UN’s affairs, including holding the post of Vice President of the UN General Assembly’s 77th session.

Vietnam has contributed to the General Assembly’s agenda, covering all aspects of international life, and fully participated in proposing and designing important global decisions.

Vietnam chaired the UNGA’s discussion and adoption of the Resolution requesting the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to provide consultancy on climate change issues, and other Resolutions on organizing a high-level meeting on the readiness to prevent and respond to epidemics, universal health insurance coverage, and tuberculosis, and promote discussions on countries at the UN Conference.

Vietnam's proactive participation has contributed substantially to the UN’s work and priorities as well as promoting international cooperation and solidarity. Vietnam has proposed initiatives and solutions to improve the efficiency of the UN’s work, and promoted dialogues to narrow differences and create consensus between countries.

Vietnam is working as a member of the UN Human Rights Council for the 2023-2025 term, the International Law Committee for 2023-2027, the Executive Council of UNESCO for the 2021-2025 term, and the Intergovernmental Committee of UNESCO's Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2022-2026).

Vietnam is determined to implement the goals of the United Nations

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s attendance at the 78th United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week and his speeches at the UN General Assembly and a number of high-level multilateral conferences has a special meaning.

It affirms Vietnam’s consistent stance of making people the center and driving force of all policy decisions, which is also the UN’s guiding principle.

In the context of deteriorating trust between countries and challenges to multilateral cooperation, Vietnam reaffirms its active implementation of international commitments and readiness to fulfill its obligations and responsibilities in all areas.

Vietnam has expanded its participation in UN peacekeeping activities to reduce conflicts and build peace in hot spots in Africa, exerted efforts in energy transition, strived to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, sped up its implementation of Sustainable Development Goals, and upheld international law.

Since Vietnam became the 149th member of the UN on September 20, 1977, it has obeyed the UN Charter and complied with the UN’s basic principles and international law. The similarity in their core values and principles has laid the foundation for cooperation and partnership between Vietnam and the UN. The values that the UN promotes are also the values that Vietnam has strived to protect for many generations: peace, national independence, and justice.
