The summit illustrated the rising status of ASEAN and the wish of ASEAN countries to work with other countries to maintain regional peace and security and achieve a stable, strong economic growth rate.

Effectively implementing cooperative projects between ASEAN and the US

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung attended all discussions and underscored the importance of the ASEAN-US relationship in regional peace, stability, and development. He said both sides should push ahead with the implementation of agreements, including the ASEAN-US action plan for 2016-2020. He urged American businesses to share information and technology with ASEAN businesses to help build an innovative and dynamic business environment. He proposed building an ASEAN-US center in Vietnam for start-up businesses and SMEs to connect with ASEAN businesses.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung had separate talks with US President Barack Obama, Indonesian President Joko Widodo, and Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-Ocha. He and other ASEAN leaders met with representatives from IBM, Microsoft, and Cisco to discuss IT cooperation with ASEAN companies. Mr. Dung said Vietnam is accelerating its reform and global integration by participating in economic cooperation mechanisms like the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).

Working together to resolve global challenges

The summit underlined the position of the ASEAN-US Strategic Partnership,  on sharing wealth and resolving cross-border disputes. Regarding recent developments in the East Sea, particularly actions to alter the status quo, increase militarization, and threaten regional peace, stability, and security and aviation and navigation safety, Prime Minister Dung said countries should build trust, organize dialogues, strengthen cooperation, and comply with international law including the 1982 UNCLOS, and support ASEAN’s central role in maintaining regional peace and security.

Prime Minister Dung hailed the US and other countries’ constructive attitude towards ASEAN in handling regional security matters. He praised the positive results of ASEAN-US cooperation and said he hopes the ASEAN-US action plan will be effectively carried out. Prime Minister Dung’s initiatives were included in the summit’s statement. ASEAN and the US will continue to respect basic principles of international law, the UN and ASEAN charters, support the building of regional and international security based on international law, resolve disputes by peaceful means, not use or threaten to use force, practice restraint, and guarantee navigation and aviation security in line with international law including the 1982 UNCLOS.
