Vietnam ready for a new period of integration

(VOVWORLD) - 2019 will be the first year that Vietnam implements the Party Secretariat’s Directive on strengthening multilateral diplomacy. After its diplomatic achievements in 2018, Vietnam is ready to enter a new period of integration to boost its international status.
Vietnam participates more in international organizations
This year Vietnam is applying for non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council for the 2020-2021 tenure. Vietnam held this important position in the 2008-2009 tenure. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh said: “The large number of votes Vietnam received revealed the degree of trust other countries have in Vietnam. I believe that 10 years later Vietnam, with its achievements during that tenure and its even greater status, will be elected again. This will be an opportunity and also a challenge for us. We have broad support from Asian countries for this position.”
Since 2018 Vietnam has been preparing to assume the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2020. Vietnam is planning theme and activities that emphasize harmonizing the interests of ASEAN members and partner countries. Mr. Minh said: “We have prepared for the ASEAN Chairmanship for a long time. Vietnam has set up a National Committee on ASEAN to prepare logistics, protocol and organization. We have experience which I believe will make us successful. Vietnam hopes to elevate its status this year, so we’ll need to make ASEAN 2020 relevant to our goal of promoting efficiency, dynamism, and creativity.”
Strengthening Vietnam’s position
Amid the growing chaos around the world this year, Vietnam intends to solidify its relations with other countries. Mr. Minh said: “This year Vietnam will continue to deepen its relations with other countries and expand foreign visits. Vietnam wants greater bilateral cooperation with other countries.”
As it continues its international integration, Vietnam will combine diplomatic activities with stronger national defense and security to maintain national sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, and maritime sovereignty. This year Vietnam will celebrate 50 years of implementing President Ho Chi Minh’s testament on promoting national strength.
