Vietnamese women’s football team enters World Cup for first time

(VOVWORLD) - The Vietnamese national women’s football team beat Chinese Taipei 2-1 on Sunday in a play-off match at the 2022 AFC Women's Asian Cup to attend the FIFA Women's World Cup for the first time.

Before the match, Vietnam ranked 2nd behind Chinese Taipei and had to win. Coach Mai Duc Chung and his team achieved their aim with 11 goal attempts against just 7 attempts by the Chinese Taipei team. Vietnam had 61% possession time and 7 corner kicks.
The first goal of the match was scored by Chuong Thi Kieu in the seventh minute giving the Vietnamese team confidence.
In the second half, rival striker Su Y-hsuan leveled the score in the 50th minute.
Six minutes later, Bich Thuy scored the winning goal for Vietnam.
At the post-game press conference, Coach Mai Duc Chung said: "The whole team is very happy after today’s victory. We kept our promise to our fans. I’m very happy now. My team and I don’t know how to express our happiness at wining a ticket to World Cup 2023. Our goals were beautiful and timely. We all burst with joy after the many hardships we have had to overcome. I ran onto the field to celebrate the victory with the team."
President Nguyen Xuan Phuc extended his congratulations to the team for their victory attributing the achievement to the talented team’s solidarity, effort and determination to overcome difficulties under the guidance of head coach Mai Duc Chung. President Phuc called the victory a milestone in the nation’s football’s history.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh sent a letter of congratulations and is scheduled to meet the team after they return home on Thursday.
The final round of the women’s World Cup 2023 will take place from July 20 to August 20 in Australia and New Zealand.
