(VOVWORLD) - In 1947, President Ho Chi Minh designated July 27 as national War Invalids Day, which was later renamed War Invalids and Martyrs Day, to call on society to honor and support war invalids and martyrs’ families in acknowledgement of their contributions to the nation. Over the years, caring for national contributors and their relatives has been strongly supported by agencies, sectors, and social organizations.

Thousands of people visited, burned incense, and paid tribute to heroic martyrs nationwide on Vietnam’s 71
st War Invalids and Martyrs Day.
Visitors to the Truong Bon National Historical Relic in Nghe An province, included expat Vietnamese from Vientiane, Laos.
Hoang Dieu, former President of the Association of Vietnamese People in Laos, said whenever a pilgrimage to the fatherland is held, they always visit the Kim Lien Relic Site and the Dong Loc T-junction Site, and burn incense at the legendary relic site of Truong Bon.
Dieu said: “Such trips offer Vietnamese people living abroad an opportunity to pay tribute to heroic martyrs who sacrificed their lives for national independence. It’s also an opportunity to review Vietnam’s history and the meritorious service of fallen soldiers. We want to connect those who live and work in Laos with the generation of people who died for the nation.”

On this occasion, many delegations from agencies and organizations have visited and presented gifts to the families of martyrs and revolutionary contributors.
Thai Dinh Hoang, Deputy Director of Da Nang’s Department of Labor, Invalids, and Social Affairs, said: “Every year on the occasion of War Invalids and Martyrs Day, we work with sectors in the city to present gifts to policy beneficiary families. There are about 27,000 national contributors in Da Nang. The municipal authorities have provided a monthly subsidy to disadvantaged policy beneficiary families.”
Hai Phong City’s Veterans Association has given 5 houses of comradeship to its members who are invalids living in poverty. 120 gift sets have been given to Association members who are invalids, sick soldiers, or martyrs’ relatives.
Major General Luu Xuan Cai, the Association’s President, said: “We are pursuing the spirit of ‘the haves help the have not's’. It is heart-rending to see disadvantaged comrades or veterans exposed to Agent Orange or whose children have been affected by the defoliant.”
