World Radio Day 2017- Radio is you

(VOVworld)- Under the theme “Radio is you”, this year’s World Radio Day, which falls annually on February 13, focuses interaction with listeners. Listener-centered radio stations intend to listen to listeners and create forums for them to express their opinions and concern.

Letters from VOV's listeners around the world

The current rapid development of science and technology and the explosion of social media are changing the media context globally. To attract listeners, radio stations have taken advantage of technology and social media.

Building trust among the public

Each radio station has its own ways to keep its loyal listeners and attract new listeners. Some have revised their programs and content, increased interactions with listeners, and created forums for them to express their own opinions. The Romanian Radio Station has become more successful by placing its listeners at the center. Founded in 1928, the station is Romania’s most prestigious and most listened-to station. Its General Director Ovidiu Miculescu said: “Our broadcasts are based on respect for the truth. Our programs’ ongoing focus is the social cohesion and balance. Our mission as the public broadcaster is being independent reliable and fair.”

Using technology to interact with listeners

In addition to interactive radio programs, radio stations listen to their listeners to find out what they want and integrate it into their plans and programs. During the last six years of fighting in Syria, it has been difficult for Syrians to access mass media and for media agencies to bring objective news to the Syrians. Lina Chawaf, Editor in Chief of Rozana FM, based in Paris, France, says the station has dozens of correspondents in Syria: “During the last six years, Syrian civilians need a platform, they need a media, who they can talk with freely and express their soul. So, Rozana is the wave for Syrian civilians to express their soul, their values and their belief.”

Rozana and many other radio stations around the world interact with listeners on the internet and the mobile devices application WhatsApp. Listeners also connect with radio stations through Viber, Skype, Twitter, Facebook, and Messenger to share their comments and ideas.

In an address on World Radio Day 2017, UNESCO General Director Irina Bokova said the way we share and access information is changing drastically. Radio stations have become a dynamic, highly-interactive, and effective mode of communication. Listening and responding to listener demands has made radio a close friend of listeners.
