(VOVworld) – Vietnam’s geographical conditions are favorable for renewable energy such sources as the sun, wind and biomass. Being severely affected by climate change, Vietnam is seeking to use renewable energy to minimize the adverse affects caused by climate change.

The Vietnamese people’s demands for energy are increasing while coal and water resources are depleting. The development of renewable energy and solar power in particular are positive and feasible moves. The Vietnamese Prime Minister has approved a master plan for electricity development in the 2011-2020 period and vision until 2030. The government has offered incentives for wind power projects. Professor Dang Hung Vo says:   “Renewable energy is a way to address the issue of energy shortage and is supported worldwide because it is clean and green. The use of renewable energy is booming worldwide, including a concept of green architecture. In Vietnam, 25% of supermarkets, such as BigC, use solar power in their operation”.

Of the renewable energy available in the nature, solar energy is the most abundant and most reliable. Located in the tropical region with a wide spectrum of solar radiation, Vietnam has great advantages for tapping this source. It could have many economic advantages if widely-applied throughout society. Experts say solar energy has great a potential for industrial production and construction. In recent years, many companies have invested in producing equipment that uses solar energy such as solar water heaters. Dam Quang Hung, Deputy Director General of Son Ha Joint-stock Company, says: “In the near future we will develop solar products for schools, army barracks, hotels, restaurant and processing industry, in addition to our solar household products. We hope that the government will provide more support to enterprises engaged in green energy production”.

With its 3,200 km coastline Vietnam also boasts an abundant source of wind power. On May 29, 2013 the Bac Lieu Wind Power factory generated its first clean electricity. Built in 2010, the factory is the second wind power project in Vietnam. It has a capacity of 99.2MW and is capable to generate 320 million KWh per year. The opening of the factory is a momentous milestone for the development of clean energy in Vietnam. Vietnam hopes to fully tap its alternative energy potential to meet the demands of national development in the near future.
