Newly-built monument commemorates 64 naval soldiers of Gac Ma Island

The memorial complex, which was initiated by the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour, inaugurated its first phase on July 15.

The highlight of the site is a 15.15m tall statue of 9 Gac Ma soldiers guarding the national flag, carved from a block of granite weighing 14 tons.

The statue also depicts a circle that symbolizes soldiers’ immortality.

A national flag surrounded by flowers highlights the spirit of the naval soldiers who bravely sacrificed themselves to protect Vietnam’s maritime sovereignty.

This ramp system was designed for war invalids and disabled people.

An underground museum holds items related to Gac Ma soldiers and their families.

The museum features a collection of historical and legal documents confirming Vietnam’s sovereignty over the Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagos.

Nguyen Van Dung, who was wounded during the March 14, 1988 battle, visited Mrs. Le Thi Niem, whose son died while on duty. Dung pledged to take care of her for the rest of her life.

The death anniversary of the 64 martyrs is observed every year to memorialize their sacrifices for national defense.

(VOVWORLD) - The Gac Ma memorial site, which covers an area of 2.5 hectares on the Cam Ranh penisula, was inaugurated recently to commemorate 64 Vietnamese soldiers who fought to protect Gac Ma Island, part of the Truong Sa (Spratly)Archipelago, on March 14th, 1988.
