COP 17 opens in Durban

Participants from more than 190 countries worldwide are in Durban, South Africa on Monday, November 28, 2011 to attend the 17th Conference of Parties to the United Nations' Framework Convention on Climate. They include heads of state and government, ministers, UN officials, members of civil society and journalists. High on the agenda will be an agreement to reduce carbon emissions and the next steps to be done after the 2007 Kyoto Protocol expires late next year. The world seems to be in a deadlock when the Kyoto Protocol comes to an end because the protocol only touches upon the responsibilities of rich countries and developing countries believe that the commitment should be extended for the rich nations to further reduce the emissions. Meanwhile, the developed countries insist that the Kyoto protocol need to be replaced with a more comprehensive treaty to include China and other countries.
