India to build bridge, tunnel to connect to Sri Lanka

(VOVworld) - Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Wednesday that India will build a sea bridge and tunnel to connect to Sri Lanka while a pact has been signed with Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal for the seamless flow of traffic and passenger vehicles.

Gadkari said the Asian Development Bank is ready to fully finance a bridge project to connect Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadi to Sri Lanka. Indian and Sri Lankan Prime Ministers discussed the project which is worth about 3.6 billion USD.

Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi assumed office his government has been focused on enhancing regional cooperation. Subsequent to Modi’s announcement of ‘Act East policy’, India proactively engaged in building effective and credible links between South Asia and Southeast Asia through enhanced regional connectivity.
