Preliminary results show the leftist politician, who presented himself as an agent of change, received over 53% of the vote, more than double the total of his closest rival. Obrador will formally take office on December 1.

In a speech to supporters, the President-elect said he will forge a new relationship with the US “rooted in mutual respect and in defense of Mexico’s migrant countrymen who work and live honestly in that country.” Obrador also promised to tackle violence and wipe out corruption.
