Vice Chairman of the Presidential Office Pham Thanh Ha announced a decision of the President on amnesty in 2024 at a press conference in Hanoi on Monday. Ha said that during the consideration process, the Amnesty Advisory Council sent teams to prisons and detention camps to check the law enforcement.

“The amnesty consideration is carried out in accordance with the provisions of law. Just like the previous years, certain principles must be followed. Pardon must be done strictly, openly, and democratically, ensuring fairness, correctness, and conditions according to the provisions of law so that all eligible prisoners are considered,” he added.

The amnesty does not discriminate or limit any inmates, whether a Vietnamese or a foreign citizen. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Do Hung Viet said 20 prisoners of foreign nationality will be pardoned.

“After these cases are granted amnesty, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will send a diplomatic note to representative agencies and consulates of the relevant countries, requesting them to coordinate with Vietnamese authorities to receive the pardoned people and take them back to their home country, or to a safe, suitable place of residence," said Viet.

At the press conference, the authorities said that the Government has directed the Ministry of Public Security and the People's Committees of provinces and cities to facilitate amnesty recipients to soon integrate into the community.
