Vice Chairman of the Presidential Office Pham Thanh Ha stressed that the amnesty reflects the lenient policy of the Vietnamese Party and State, and the humane Vietnamese tradition.
Amnesty work always complies with the Constitution and laws, ensuring fairness, objectivity, publicity and transparency. This is also the consistent policy of the Party and State of Vietnam in promoting and protecting human rights in a fair and equal manner for all citizens, including those serving prison sentences, Mr. Ha said.
Deputy Foreign Minister Ha Kim Ngoc said there are 643 foreign prisoners serving their sentences in Vietnam.
“After reviewing their records, Vietnamese authorities will announce the specific number of foreign prisoners to be pardoned this year. 16 foreign prisoners received amnesty in 2022," said Mr. Ngoc.
Since 2009, Vietnam has carried out 9 amnesties on important events and major holidays of the country. More than 92 thousand prisoners have received amnesty.
