(VOVWORLD) - The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and allied fighters have taken control of the strategic Sina'a neighborhood in Syria's northern city of Raqqa, which is the Islamic State’s de facto capital.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Monday that the victory pushes them closer to the walls of the Old City. This has been their biggest achievement in an offensive to Raqqa which began last Tuesday, after months of supply route closures.
