He was speaking at the opening session of the Economic and Financial Committee of the 79th UN General Assembly held in New York from Monday to Wednesday.

About 80% of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals are at risk of missing their deadlines due to political tensions, humanitarian crises, climate challenges, and rising inequality, said Giang. Countries should step up climate mitigation by fulfilling their commitments and increasing financing for climate initiatives, he added.

Transitioning to renewable energy is essential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create a more sustainable future. Vietnam welcomes support from the UN and international partners in realizing the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), and expects additional support for developing countries, the Ambassador said.

Countries should focus on eradicating poverty and ensuring food security for all by promoting sustainable agriculture, diversifying crops, maintaining food supply chains, and increasing investment in education and job creation, he said. Giang expressed solidarity with the least developed countries, landlocked developing countries, and developing small island states and urged more action programs for these countries.

According to the Ambassador, Vietnam currently ranks 55th of 166 countries in implementing SDGs and is ready to cooperate with partners toward a sustainable future in which no one is left behind.
