During a recent interview with the Vietnam News Agency, she noted that maternal mortality fell from 233 per 100,000 live births in the 1990s to 46 per 100,000 live births in 2019.

She praised Vietnam’s improvement in gender equality, especially in politics. Women constitute 30.3% of the 15th National Assembly deputies, 4% more than in the previous tenure. Women’s participation in the workforce almost equals men’s (73.3% for men and 65.3% for women in 2021).

According to Kitahara, the role of Vietnamese women is expanding rapidly. Modernization and IT have opened up a lot more opportunities for women and girls in Vietnam, who are now enjoying success in economics, politics, and social activities.

Kitahara said the UNFPA will continue to work with Vietnam to explore and fulfill  the potential of women and girls, because “Girls Deserve to Shine”.
