There is a high risk of new strains of avian flu entering Vietnam from China. Though Vietnam has recorded no cases yet of H7N9, two deaths from H5N1 occurred in Binh Phuoc and Dong Thap province in January, after an exposure to infected poultry. The ministry ordered the municipal and provincial authorities to step up inspections for new strains of avian flu at border gates and in the community, concentrating on collecting samples from pneumonia patients and people who have visited regions of known infection or have been exposed to poultry.
