President Obama urges China to stop escalating tensions in the East Sea

(VOVworld) – China needs to be a more responsible power and avoid flexing its muscles which escalate tensions in the East Sea. US President Barack Obama told CNN in an interview ahead of his visit to China for the G20 summit.

He said the US supports the peaceful rise of China but that Beijing had to recognize that with increasing power comes increasing responsibilities and international law needs to be abode by. He urged Beijing to bind itself to international rules and norms as it signed treaties that call for international arbitration around maritime issues. President Obama also urged China to refrain from provocative actions in the East Sea, particularly those threatening neighboring countries and escalate tensions in the region. He said the US will determine specific actions if they see international rules and norms violated or any economic policy that harms other countries.
