Since the beginning of this year, the investigation agency of the Ministry of Public Security has dealt with 420 cases involving more than 870 people accused of corruption. More than 650 defendants have been prosecuted on charges, including embezzlement of assets, abuse of power in office, abuse of power to appropriate assets, and receiving bribes. Anti-corruption results have received public praise. Pham Thi Kim Loan, a member of the Ho Chi Minh City Lawyers’ Delegation, said: “Two former Ministers of Information and Communications have been arrested. Before them, multiple Party members who violated the law were dealt with. Any official, whether incumbent or retired, should be punished if they are found to have violated the law. This will deter others from committing crimes.”

Anti-corruption remains a key task

The government has defined the fight against corruption as a key task and will make sure the Politburo’s directives and regulations are abided by. Protection of whistleblowers on corruption, waste, and negative phenomena will be strengthened and sterner inspection and discipline will be applied. Tran Quoc Trung, Secretary of the Can Tho city People’s Committee, said Can Tho will increase the responsibility of leaders in preventing and controlling corruption and waste.  Mr. Trung said: “Inspections, checks, and oversight are carried out regularly. Wrongdoers must be strictly dealt with. Rules and disciplines are being tightened to prevent corruption and waste.”

The Vietnamese Party and State have renewed their determination to combat corruption in bringing to light recent cases involving high-ranking officials.
