(VOVWORLD) - The 2nd DPRK-USA summit begins in Hanoi on Wednesday. It’s an opportunity for Vietnam to affirm its foreign policy of multilateralism, diversification, and befriending all countries, and play a part in the Korean peace process.
The selection of Vietnam as a venue for their summit shows that US President Donald Trump and DPRK Chairman Kim Jong-un regard Vietnam as a trusted partner and a country with a balanced and open foreign policy. It also acknowledges Vietnam’s capability and role in regional and global security.
Vietnam takes seriously its role in conciliation diplomacy
One of Vietnam’s foreign affairs priorities is conciliation diplomacy. With its experience in mediating peace, Vietnam will promote its role as the host country and support the summit’s goals.
Deputy Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung, said: “Vietnam is a responsible and active country within the international community and wants to contribute to world peace. Its policy is to be a conciliator in international relations. Vietnam’s own peace talks took place in Geneva and Paris. Now peace talks are being held in Vietnam. Vietnam is a trusted partner of many countries and has good relations with both the DPRK and the US.
Wang Junsheng, Director of the Department of China’s Regional Strategy, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said: “The world is turning attention to Vietnam. This is a good opportunity for Vietnam to promote its image. It’s no surprise that the DPRK and the US chose Vietnam because Vietnam has good relations with both sides. Vietnam and the US fought a war, but they have since established diplomatic ties and become partners. It’s been a successful relationship. Vietnam and the DPRK have also developed a friendly relationship since they established diplomatic ties in 1950. The US and DPRK both have a high regard for Vietnam’s role. The world is paying attention to Vietnam’s contribution to the summit.”
Vietnam, a peace-loving country
