Vietnam tightens relations with neighboring countries

(VOVWORLD) - Party General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong is on an official friendly visit to Laos and a state visit to Cambodia from Sunday to Tuesday at the invitation of his Lao counterpart Bounnhang Vorachith and Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni.

Party General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong’s visits express Vietnam’s support for Laos’s national defense and construction and strengthen unity and comprehensive cooperation with Cambodia.

Vietnam, Laos affirm traditional friendly relationship

The leaders of Vietnam and Laos agreed to strengthen the countries’ relationship based on independence and self-reliance and promote the advantages of each country with respect for equality and mutual benefit. Both countries will give each other incentives suitable to their special relationship. They agreed that with complications in the region and the world, both countries should collaborate closely and effectively within global cooperative frameworks.

Lao People’s Revolutionary Party leader and President Bounnhang Vorachith said: “On behalf of the Lao Party, State, and people, I’d like to sincerely thank Vietnam for its great support for Laos’s struggle for national independence in the past and construction at present. We will continue working with our Vietnamese comrades to foster our special unity and comprehensive cooperation, which have been nurtured through many decades.”

Party General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong and his Lao counterpart Bounnhang Vorachith witnessed the signing of 9 cooperative documents between ministries and sectors.

Vietnam and Cambodia promote comprehensive cooperation

During his state visit to Cambodia on Monday and Tuesday, Mr. Trong will hold talks with King Norodom Sihamoni and Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk before meeting Tep Vong, the Great Supreme Patriarch of Cambodia, and Bour Kry, the Supreme Patriarch of the Thammayut order of Cambodia. He will also meet Senate President Say Chhum, President of the National Assembly Heng Samrin, and Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Kin Phea, director general of the Royal Academy of Cambodia’s International Relations Institute, said: “The Vietnam-Cambodia relationship is based on history, politics, culture, and geography. The two countries have given priority to their friendly neighbourliness. The visit by Party General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong to Cambodia shows progress in our relations. We believe that the close cooperation in politics, economics, culture, and society will continue.”
