(VOVWORLD) - 20 countries and the European Union issued a joint statement this week expressing concern for Afghan women and girls, their right to go to school and work, and their freedom of movement.

The statement signed by the US, the UK, Australia, Brazil, and the European Union urged those in positions of power and authority across Afghanistan to guarantee their protection.
The statement said Afghan women and girls, like all Afghan people, deserve to live in safety, security, and dignity. Any form of discrimination or abuse should be prevented. The international community stands ready to assist them with humanitarian aid and support to ensure that their voices will be heard.
The signatories will monitor closely how any future government ensures the rights and freedoms that have become an integral part of the lives of women and girls in Afghanistan during the last 20 years.
