Spain recorded an average temperature for the year of 15.5 degrees Celsius, the highest since records began in 1916. It was the first time that the average yearly temperature surpassed 15 degrees.
Spain also recorded one of its driest years in 2022, with only 2005 and 2017 having received less precipitation. Spain’s reservoirs were at 43% capacity at the end of December, far below a 10-year average of 53%.
The scorching temperatures this summer caused the deaths of 4,744 people in Spain and contributed to wildfires that ravaged over 300,000 hectares of land.
