President Nguyen Xuan Phuc on Sunday praised the hospital staff, especially the team that successfully transplanted the baby's liver, who he said have kindled new hopes for families of children with end-stage liver failure.
He added that pediatric liver transplant is one of the most difficult techniques in organ transplant and the doctors of the National Children's Hospital have fully mastered the process of pre-transplant exploration, transplant techniques, anesthesia, and resuscitation.
On March 14, the 9-month-old boy with end-stage liver disease caused by biliary cirrhosis was transplanted with a part of his father's liver in a 9-hour surgery. The 25th successful liver transplant at the National Children's Hospital was performed entirely by the hospital's doctors.
