The meeting acknowledged ADMM+ members’ efforts to promote practical cooperation in maritime security. Delegates called for settling maritime disputes by peaceful means in line with international law. They underlined the importance of effectively implementing the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and the early completion of the Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC) to build trust and maintain peace, security, and stability in the region.

Addressing the meeting, Defense Minister General Ngo Xuan Lich said issues related to fishermen might affect bilateral relations if they are not addressed properly, stressing the need to educate fishermen and avoid brutal treatment or use of force. Long-term legal solutions are being designed. Mr. Lich said that ensuring a peaceful and stable environment requires solidarity among countries with strategic trust in line with a comprehensive legal framework.

Philippines Defense Minister Delfin Lorenzana said the ADMM+ will be held annually starting next year. He handed over the ADMM and ADMM+ Chair to Singaporean Defense Minister Ng Eng Heng. Singapore will assume the chairmanship of ASEAN in 2018.
