Afghanistan’s Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) announced that the Presidential Election will be held on April 5, 2014, a few months prior to the final withdrawal of coalition forces. This will be the third Presidential Election in Afghanistan since Taliban regime was overthrown in 2001. According to Afghani law, President Hamid Karzai is not allowed to run again after two terms in office. There is concern over whether the security forces will be able to ensure security for the elections in 2014, whether US and NATO forces leave Afghanistan or not. The transfer of security responsibility began in July, 2011 and is expected to be completed in 2014. President Karzai says the Election will definitely be held as scheduled before his term ends and he believes Afghani forces can ensure security for this event.
