(VOVworld) - Tens of thousands across Spain have taken to the streets to demand a referendum on whether the country should keep its monarchy or be proclaimed a republic, following the abdication of King Juan Carlos I on Monday. King Juan Carlos I was popular as he led Spain’s transition from dictatorship to democracy in the 1970s. However, in recent years, he has lost the support of the Spanish through due to scandals and corruption involving a number of royal family members.
