(VOVWORLD) - The Argentinian government said Friday that it has withdrawn from the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), partly because of its high ideological content and administrative disorder.

Argentina is the 5th country leaving the UNASUR, following Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Peru. The union was established in 2008 as an initiative of late Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to counter the US’s influence in the region.

Last month, Presidents of Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Peru, along with representatives from Guyana founded the Forum for the Progress of South America (PROSUR), aiming to replace the UNASUR.

Bolivia, Uruguay, and Suriname sent representatives to witness the event but did not join the new organization.
