(VOVworld) - The US and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) issued the Sunnylands Declaration on Wednesday after their two-day summit in California.

A White House announcement said 17 key principles are reaffirmed in the document. The principles include respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations, commitment to peaceful resolution of disputes, commitment to fostering cooperation in navigation, and firm adherence to shared prosperity, and sustainable, inclusive economic growth. The Special ASEAN-US Leaders’ Summit was the first held in the US and the first Summit following the establishment of the ASEAN Community in late 2015.

The Summit marked a watershed year for ASEAN and the increasingly close ASEAN-US strategic partnership. Analysts say the US saw the summit as a diplomatic milestone in the last term of President Barack Obama, whose foreign policy has included a turn toward Asia.
