(VOVworld) - Croatian newspaper Vecernji List reported on Saturday that Croatian Interior Ministry confirmed the country would introduce a quota for migrants and would allow only 580 of them to cross its border a day, just like Slovenia. It added that this was agreed by police directors from Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, and Austria. The decision was made under pressure from Austria, which has recently restricted the entry to a daily maximum of 3,200 migrants in transit and 80 asylum applicants.
Approximately 6,500 people have been left stranded at the Idomeni camp on Greece’s border with Macedonia after four Balkan countries announced a daily cap on refugee arrivals. The tighter controls have left thousands stranded in Greece, as Europe’s worst refugee crisis since the Second World War shows no sign of abating.
The European Commission has said that Belgium has not respected the Schengen agreement by organizing police checks at its border with France, the Libre Belgique reported on Saturday. It quoted a letter the European Immigration Commissioner, Dimitris Avramopoulos, sent to Prime Minister Charles Michel and his Home Affairs minister Jan Jambon.
The Belgian government decided to restart border controls on Tuesday, after France announced it would partially dismantle the refugee camp known as ‘the Jungle’ in Calais. Belgian authorities are worried about an influx of illegal immigrants along the coast.
