Biggest anti-government protest in Poland since 1989

(VOVworld) – Tens of thousands of Poles staged a huge protest march through Warsaw against the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party on Saturday. This has been the largest demonstration since 1989 in Poland. Protestors expressed their solidarity with the EU while objected PiS’s internal and foreign policy and last October’s election results.

The throng stretched at least 3 km, putting the number of demonstrators at 240,000, which was more than expected. PiS party leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski said the number of protestors was not a big matter and a threat. The march took place amid tensions between Warsaw and Brussels over the past months. It resulted from several PiS actions including attempts to take more direct control of the judiciary and public media.
