Home Secretary Amber Rudd is having the passport redesigned as part of a routine five-year update of security features to prevent counterfeiting. Although the Home Office says there are “no immediate plans to change the format or color of the passport”, it confirmed that a return to a blue cover has not been ruled out. The new passport will go live in July, 2019, shortly after Britain’s projected exit from the EU in March, 2019.
