Cairo Summit for Peace ends without Joint Statement
(VOVWORLD) - The closely watched Cairo Summit for Peace, held Saturday with the aim of preventing a further escalation in heavy fighting between Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas, ended without issuing a joint statement.

The differences between the Arab and European delegations hindered the issuance of a final communique for the summit. While leaders of the Arab countries at the Cairo Summit for Peace have focused on the need to halt the conflict in Gaza and return to negotiations, most of the European officials in attendance were more keen on condemning Hamas for its 7th of October attack inside Israel and defending Israel's "right to self-defense."
Meanwhile, Egyptian Presidential Spokesman Ahmed Fahmy said the summit has achieved its goal in “increasing areas of understanding” among the participating countries. Fahmy added that the countries attending the summit expressed similar views on various topics, including the need to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.
In another development, the United Nations is hoping a second convoy of trucks would be sent into Gaza on Sunday under a light inspection system that will allow relief deliveries to scale up into next week, its humanitarian chief said.
UN aid chief Martin Griffiths expressed his hope that the convoy of trucks was not subject to inspection of the kind that officials say would be needed for continuous deliveries.
The UN says 100 trucks daily are needed to meet essential needs in Gaza.
A first convoy of 20 trucks arrived in Gaza through the Rafah crossing with Egypt on Saturday, but efforts to deliver supplies to the besieged enclave have been held up by Israeli demands to verify aid.
