Cambodia: CPP confirmed no re-election
(VOVworld) – The ruling Cambodia People’s Party (CPP) has once again rejected the opposition’s request, confirming that there will be no re-election. The “New Cambodia” newspaper quoted Deputy Prime Minister Hor Nam Hong as saying that the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP)’s request will only be debated once this party joins the Parliament. According to the country’s laws and Constitution, any issues related to election must be debated at the parliament. Mr. Hor Nam Hong’s statement was made after President of CNRP Sam Rainsy said in his announcement posted on the social networks on Friday that his party does not accept the election results last July and called for a re-election.

In another development the same day, CPP issued an announcement that representatives of Cambodia's ruling and opposition parties will meet next Tuesday to discuss the establishment of a mechanism for an electoral reform. The announcement reiterated that CPP is willing to negotiate with CNRP on an electoral reform mechanism in accordance with agreements made at high-level meetings between the two parties.
