Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe demanded an “entirely different” response because North Korea’s nuclear threat has reached a “different dimension” with its ballistic missile and nuclear tests so far this year.
Chinese premier Li Keqiang told the General Assembly that countries must seek a solution to the North Korean nuclear issue through dialogue and remain committed to the mechanism on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.
According to UN diplomats, China and the US have begun discussions on a new possible sanction against North Korea. Premier Li and US President Barack Obama met early this week and agreed to strengthen cooperation in the UN Security Council and law enforcement channels.
