(VOVWORLD) - The United Nations has "made intensive efforts with all parties" to achieve a ceasefire in Lebanon, a senior UN official said Tuesday.

Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the UN under-secretary-general for peace operations, made the remarks in a meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati in Beirut, during a trip to express solidarity with the Lebanese people.
The UN official highlighted the importance of implementing Resolution 1701 adopted by the UN in 2006 to end armed conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. He urged for cooperation between the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the Lebanese army to ease tensions in the country's southern border.
Prime Minister Najib Mikati affirmed the Lebanese Government’s commitment to implementing Resolution 1701 and support for cooperation between the Lebanese army and UN forces.
