Cuba’s President Raul Castro on Thursday chaired the 59^th anniversary of National Uprising Day held at the Mariana Grajales Revolution Square in the eastern province of Guantanamo.

The ceremonial meeting commemorated a rebel attack led by Fidel Castro against the Moncada military barracks, opening the revolution for Cuba’s national liberation. Speaking at the ceremony, President Castro said it was a great masterstroke by the Cuban people who have been sustaining their revolution and resisting outside pressure for the last five decades. He called for unity of the Party and the people to continue implementation of the socio-economic policies adopted at the Cuba’s 6^th Party Congress.

Castro said although many challenges remain, the Cuban people will do their best to update their economy and continue steadfastly on the path of socialism.
