(VOVworld) - A Vietnamese delegation led by Deputy PM Nguyen Thien Nhan attended the opening ceremony of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development, or Rio+20, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Thursday. Mr. Nhan made a key speech highlighting Vietnam’s contributions to sustainable development in the world over the past decade and its views on a strategy for future sustainable growth.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Deputy PM took the floor at a special session of the UNDP on Global Energy Assessment. Nhan said that Vietnam’s development and renewal process has been made possible by various domestic agencies, sectors, and local communities, especially the energy sector. However, the scope and efficiency of this sector remain poor with a far lower per capita energy index compared to the average global level. Vietnam’s energy security is not guaranteed and the investment for producing electricity in rural, disadvantaged, and islands areas is still limited. Vietnam is outlining a strategy on green growth to ensure sustainable economic development, use energy efficiently, and develop new kinds of renewable energies. Deputy PM Nhan said that to develop energy sustainably, Vietnam needs financial and technical support from the international community to design national and regionial energy plans and renewable energy projects.
