The defendants were convicted in the biggest trial in Egypt’s history, which prosecuted 1,200 supporters of toppled president Mohammed Morsi. Of the MB members who were convicted at the trial, 153 are in custody, while the rest are on the run. According to defense lawyers, the defendants can appeal and the appellate court can carry out a new trial or commute the death sentences.
