The statement was made to rebuff Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s accusation on Monday that the EU hasn’t met its commitment under the deal to send Syrian refugees back across the Aegean and that Turkey hasn’t yet received any aid from the EU.
Mr. Schinas said the EU has mobilized 3 million euros to help refugees in Turkey and about 740 million euros have been already allocated. He said the Commission is about to approve another allocation of 1.4 billion euros, bringing the total allocated to 2.15 billion euros before the end of the month, and that the EU is keeping its commitment and that the money promised under the deal is being allocated to benefit the refugees and their host communities in Turkey, not for the government.
