(VOVWORLD) - More than a billion COVID-19 vaccines produced in the EU have been exported to more than 150 countries since December 2020, making the bloc the biggest exporter of the shots, European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen said on Monday.
87 million doses have been delivered to the WHO's COVAX scheme.
Von der Leyen said the EU will donate at least half a billion doses to the middle- and lower-income countries that are affected most by the pandemic, and called on other countries to speed up their vaccine sharing.
She said the EU is sharing its vaccines fairly with the world, making sure that the number of doses exported is equal to the number of doses used by the EU.
The EU and the US are working together to help achieve vaccination of 70% of the world's population by next year, she said.
