(VOVWORLD) - European Union leaders held a strategic discussion on Tuesday in Slovenia, on the EU's global role in light of recent developments in Afghanistan, the AUKUS security partnership, and the evolution of the EU’s relationship with China. This was the first meeting of EU leaders since June.

They promised to consolidate their strength and strengthen their resilience by reducing critical dependencies, said EU Council President Charles Michel after the meeting. He added that to become more effective and assertive on the international stage, the EU needs to increase its ability to act autonomously.
He said that EU members are committed to working with their allies and like-minded partners, in particular the US and NATO, which is the cornerstone of EU security.
