(VOVWORLD) -The EU on Monday pledged to spend an initial 8.4 billion USD on humanitarian aid in 2024, less than last year despite soaring needs in Gaza and elsewhere.

"I think this is a solid amount ... but it could be better", EU humanitarian aid and crisis management chief Janez Lenarcic told a humanitarian conference in Brussels. Last year, the EU pledged 9.1 billion USD.
EU High Representative for Security and Foreign Policy Josep Borrell said the situation in Gaza is dire, and the people there are no longer on the brink of famine but are now in a state of famine.
The aim of the 2-day conference is to find ways to increase aid to Gaza by land, sea, or air.
