EU proposes a post-conflict political solution for Gaza

(VOVWORLD) - The European Union set out proposals on Monday for how Gaza should be run after the conflict between Israel and Hamas ends, with a focus on increasing the  power of the Palestinian authority and a greater role for Arab countries.

Speaking to reporters after an EU foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said it is vital to think about what happens after the conflict, even as the fighting rages, because the international community has failed  to create a durable settlement of the long-running conflict between Israelis and Palestinians.

Borrell presented proposals saying "no" to three things and "yes" to three things. He says “no” to any forced displacement of Palestinians from Gaza, to a permanent occupation by the Israeli military or any change to Gaza's size, and to a return of Hamas.

He says “yes” to a reinforced Palestinian authority with a legitimacy to be defined and decided upon by the UN Security Council, to Arab countries being more strongly involved in supporting this new Palestinian Authority, and to the EU being more involved in the region, particularly in building a Palestinian state.

Borrell said the most urgent thing the international community must promote right now is a ceasefire to suspend the conflict in Gaza for humanitarian reasons.

“We ask for immediate pauses. I’m saying that in the plural…not a single pause, but several pauses. It's an objective - immediate pauses and humanitarian corridors to be established in order to face the dire situation of the people in Gaza,” said Borrell.

According to data released by the United Nations on Monday, more than half of the 2.4 million people in Gaza have had to relocate and are completely dependent on humanitarian aid to live.

But the United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Gaza Strip warned that humanitarian activities will end in the next 48 hours because no fuel trucks are being allowed to enter the region.
