EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said the death sentence was inconsistent with Egypt’s international commitments, adding that Egyptian judicial authorities need to ensure defendants' rights to a fair trial and conduct proper and independent investigations in line with international standards. The US expressed deep concerns about the verdict against Morsi and his supporters, who were involved in a mass jailbreak in 2011. According to the US State Department, Washington strongly condemned the verdict, saying it was not in line with international law. The US also stressed the need to provide a fair appeal process for every Egyptian citizen. The Italian Foreign Ministry also released a statement condemning the verdict of the court. Italy has long abandoned the death sentence and hopes that the Egyptian judicial authorities will finalize a decision in line with international law.
