Facebook faces increasing pressure from US, Europe
(VOVWORLD) - Lawmakers in the US and Europe are putting more pressure on Facebook to seek explanation on the company’s privacy practices.
The US Federal Trade Commission said on Monday it was investigating how the social network allowed the data of 50 million users to get into the hands of a political consultancy, adding that it has concerns about the privacy practices of Facebook. If the FTC finds Facebook in violation of the consent decree, it has the power to fine the company billions of dollars.
The US Senate Judiciary Committee also said it had requested the CEOs of Facebook, Alphabet Inc and Twitter to testify at an April 10 hearing on data privacy. The US House Energy and Commerce Committee and US Senate Commerce Committee also formally asked Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to appear at a congressional hearing.
EU Justice Commissioner Vera Jourova asked the network to confirm in two weeks whether any data of EU citizens had been affected by the recent scandal.
